Comparison
BNI, InterNations, ÜBERSTUNDE, Meetup or Berliner Netzwerk?
Five formats that often get mentioned in the same breath. BNI and Meetup have little in common with us, InterNations and ÜBERSTUNDE quite a lot more. We've written down the differences, including the ones where we don't come out on top. If you end up somewhere else, this page has done its job.
The quick answer
- You want a predictable flow of referrals, with structure and commitment, and you have a marketing budget? → BNI.
- You want to meet new people often, at special venues, beyond the boardroom too, and a ticket per evening is worth it to you? → ÜBERSTUNDE.
- You've just moved to Berlin and want an international circle of friends first and business contacts second? → InterNations.
- You want to meet people with no strings attached, on today's topic, maybe not next month? → Meetup.
- You want to build a network in Berlin's Mittelstand over years, with no fees and no attendance rules? → Probably us.

Meetings last 90 minutes and follow a fixed agenda; each chapter admits only one member per profession; membership runs for one or two years, after which the chapter decides on renewal.
ÜBERSTUNDE figures: ueberstunde.com, as of September 2026. After-work tickets in Berlin most recently €20 to €23, KLUB evenings more. When BNI is the better choice
Honestly: in several cases.
BNI describes itself this way: members are meant to win customers for each other like an external sales team, week after week. That's not a criticism, it's the product. With us, business comes through recommendations, but nobody counts them and nobody is obliged to give them.
A weekly date with compulsory attendance works. Our “twice a year is enough” is comfortable, and for some people that's exactly why it doesn't work.
At BNI you're the only electrician in the room. In our directory there are currently 15 businesses from IT & Digital.
BNI has an extensive training programme. We have two volunteers and a restaurant.
BNI counts more than 335,000 businesses in 11,200 groups in 77 countries. We are 77 people in Berlin.
When ÜBERSTUNDE is the better choice
It's the format most like ours: once a month, changing venues, starting at 6 pm, no icebreaker games, and there too sales shouldn't take centre stage. The differences lie elsewhere.
ÜBERSTUNDE reports more than 2,000 participants a month across 15 cities. You'll meet more people in one evening there than with us. Our tables are smaller and often the same people come back, which is the point.
They promote special locations, and the list of Berlin dates delivers. We meet in restaurants and businesses run by our members. Good, but rarely spectacular.
Besides the after-work there are KLUB evenings and talks, in some months several dates. With us it's one evening a month, fewer in summer.
ÜBERSTUNDE explicitly invites young professionals and students and runs a job board. Our tables are made up of people who make decisions in their business. If you're looking for a job, you're better off there.
A KLUB member is part of it nationwide. We're only in Berlin.
The bottom line: at ÜBERSTUNDE you pay for a ticket each evening, and everything is professionally organised. With us you pay nothing, and two business owners organise it alongside their own companies. ÜBERSTUNDE has been in Berlin since 2023, we have been since 2001.
When InterNations is the better choice
InterNations is built for people who have moved abroad. Settling in and making friends come first, business second. That's exactly what many newcomers need in their first year.
More than five million members worldwide, and when you move on, the next city has a community too. With us it's one city and a table of 20 to 30.
InterNations is open to every profession and career stage. Our tables are made up of people who make decisions in their own company.
Between official events and member activities, a big city offers a lot. We meet once a month, and only some of our evenings are in English.
What stays: InterNations connects internationals with each other. We connect you with Berlin's small and mid-sized businesses, the companies that hire, buy, recommend and stay. The two go well together.
InterNations: internations.org, official factsheet, December 2023 (5 million+ members, 420 communities, about 500 official events and 3,500 activities a month). Prices for the Albatross membership are shown after sign-up.
When Meetup is the better choice
When you're new to Berlin and want to see what's out there first. When you're drawn to a topic rather than a city. When you want to be able to disappear tomorrow without anyone noticing.
The price: on an open platform nobody checks who turns up. You'll sit next to people who don't make decisions, and today's group may not exist a year from now. We've been around for 25 years.
When we're the right fit
- When you make decisions in your business and want to meet people who do too.
- When you have no budget for networking, or don't want to spend one. We cost nothing because nobody makes money from it.
- When you don't want to be sold to. Introduce yourself, yes. Sell, no. Anyone who treats the group as a sales channel gets a friendly word, and if it happens again, no further invitations.
- When your schedule is irregular. Self-employed people have weeks when nothing else fits. With us, nobody notices.
- When you think long-term. Most of our members have been with us for years. What grows from it grows slowly.
What we're not
So that nobody is disappointed later:
- Not a lead channel. We don't count referrals, we don't measure revenue and we don't promise any. If you want to see a return within three months, we're the wrong format.
- Not an association. No office, no legal advice, no lobbying. Two business owners who do this alongside their own companies.
- No training. No talks, no certificates, no networking method.
- Small. 77 active members, and we take a summer break.
And the others?
BVMW, IHK events, Wirtschaftsjunioren, Rotary, trade associations: each has its own purpose. If you're looking for representation and lobbying, an association will serve you better than we can. Networks aren't mutually exclusive; most of our members are active elsewhere too.
Come along once and you'll know.
Guests pay a €10 deposit and get it back when they turn up. No interview, no application process, no renewal vote.
